Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to estimate changing patterns in student-faculty interactions during college and examine the effects of student characteristics and early college experiences on this pattern in South Korea. Methodology: This was accomplished by employing a multilevel growth model using the panel data from the Korean Education Longitudinal Studies conducted in 2011, 2012, and 2014, which include 1,084 undergraduate students from four-year colleges and universities in Korea. Findings: The results from the unconditional model suggested that student-faculty interactions have been increasing over time and there are statistically significant differences in the initial value and the change rate of student-faculty interactions according to student characteristics and early college experiences. Student major, attending freshmen courses and orientation, a sense of belonging, college adaptation, and career exploration behaviors influence the initial frequency of student-faculty interactions. However, the change rate of student-faculty interactions had a negative correlation with its initial value, and attending orientation, a sense of belonging, and career exploration behavior were affected by that rate. Value: The findings imply that higher education institutes need to pay more attention to students’ early college experiences and need to develop more effective freshmen curricular and co-curricular programs to improve student-faculty interactions.
