Abstract
This study explored the career decision-making motivations and conflict factors experienced by fixed-term subject teachers transitioning to a career as professional counseling teachers. In-depth interviews were conducted with six fixed-term subject teachers, and the data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings indicated that their transition was driven by excessive workload and responsibilities, recognition of the importance of counseling studies, dissatisfaction in prior roles, the attractiveness of the counselor role, and a desire to retain their educator identity, while conflicts during the preparation process centered on academic demands, attachment to their subject and teaching, and concerns regarding counselor role execution. Overall, the results suggest that this career transition involves complex interactions among workload burden, employment insecurity, academic difficulties, and role ambiguity, highlighting the need for tailored training support, clearer legal definitions, and integrated role design that acknowledges teachers’ educational experience.
