Abstract
This study compares and analyzes the nonverbal politeness strategies of Korea and France within the framework of Politeness Theory and explores their pedagogical implications for foreign language education. The analysis reveals that Korean speakers tend to employ negative politeness strategies—such as silence, gaze avoidance, and smile—whereas French speakers prefer positive politeness strategies including eye contact expressive gestures and physical contact. The findings confirm that identical nonverbal behaviors may be interpreted differently depending on cultural context often leading to intercultural misunderstandings. Therefore foreign language education should integrate nonverbal communication with verbal instruction and promote cultural comparison and video analysis to enhance learners’ intercultural communicative competence. This study extends Politeness Theory from the verbal to the nonverbal dimension and provides practical insights for effective intercultural pedagogy.
