Abstract

This paper deeply analyzes the post-anthropocentric gaze and the ethics of coexistence in Kim Bok-hee's poetry from the perspective of critical posthumanism. Kim Bok-hee focuses on the subjectivity of nonhuman entities—such as birds, ghosts, and robots—and the potential relationships they form with humans, thereby dismantling the anthropocentric thought constructed by modern rationality. In her poetry, the human subject undergoes an ontological shift oriented toward the ‘outside’. Through interactions with vibrant matter like ‘stones’ and ‘snow,’ the poet finds that human thought and identity are constantly being reconfigured, establishing a post-anthropocentric viewpoint. Furthermore, the human body and everyday spaces, through acts like ‘sleeping’ and ‘opening doors,’ become hybrid intermediate zones jointly appropriated by nonhuman or spectral entities like ghosts. This functions as a strategy of estrangement, eliminating the privilege of the human subject and dissolving the boundaries between human and nonhuman. Moreover, Kim Bok-hee’s poetry utilizes 'vulnerability'—shared by all beings, including humans—as a common denominator to construct a co-evolutionary solidarity of mutual care and protection among heterogeneous entities. Diverse vulnerable beings, such as girls, ghosts, flora, fauna, and robots, are presented in a chain, seeking the possibility of a new community where they become companion species and coexist. Ultimately, Kim Bok-hee presents the emergence of nonhumans not as a catastrophic apocalypse but as a positive turning point that advocates for the ethical imperative of coexistence. This is a significant literary achievement that clearly programs the responsibility of coexistence and the welcoming of the vulnerable Other required in the posthuman era.
