Abstract

This article ultimately aims to elucidate the logical structure of the ecological thought articulated in Kim Hye-soon’s poetics and to clarify both its modes of practical enactment and the posthuman ethics it entails. Previous studies have predominantly discussed Kim’s poetics from the perspective of a feminist poetics. By contrast, this study foregrounds the fact that Kim’s understanding of womanhood is deeply intertwined with her conception of nature and grounded in ecological thought, and accordingly focuses on the process of logical articulation through which woman and nature become intricately entangled, mediated by the body. Furthermore, it interprets the poetic realization of ecological thought as a practice of openness toward the Other that, by conjoining the agentive capacity of “doing” (hagi) with the generative capacity of “molecularization,” dismantles binary oppositions and the logic of identity; this process, it is argued, exemplifies a posthuman ethics that moves beyond anthropocentrism by emphasizing an affective transformation extending to ghosts and animals. Thus, by reading the ecological thought embedded in Kim Hye-soon’s poetics, this study actively rearticulates the significance of her poetics in the face of the global predicament of the Anthropocene and the climate crisis. It is expected that this research will contribute to broadening the horizon of future interpretations of Kim Hye-soon’s poetic world.
