Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the characteristics of animal subjectivity in Kim Hye-soon's poetry. Through this, it analyzes how the characteristics of posthumanism are realized in modern Korean poetry through methodologies and worldviews. Posthumanism emerged as a new analytical concept in Korean poetry, reflecting on the various challenges facing human society. Modern poetry has traditionally relied on the power of the subject to relate to others and the world, remaining stuck in anthropocentrism. It has become crucial to move beyond human-centered thinking and embrace a posthumanist perspective that shares or coexists with other beings. This paper explores how the expansion of nonhumans, where animals become the subject of posthumanism, is expressed through Kim Hye-soon's poetry. Kim Hye-soon is a poet who actively embodies animal subjectivity as a nonhuman subject in her poetry. Among concepts that embrace oppositions such as human and animal, subject and other, civilization and nature, and humanism and posthumanism, the animal subject has achieved the most tangible results. Kim Hye-soon demonstrates the characteristics of posthumanism through animal subjects, represented by "pigs" and "sea anemones." Specifically, she reflects the nature of non-human subjects through the shift to animal subjects, the transformation of diverse identities, and the bodily sensations of animals. Kim Hye-soon's poetry testifies to human violence, death, and social structures through the voices of pigs. Furthermore, she reveals archetypal symbols of life, motherhood, and freedom through images of water and the sea. The animal subjects revealed in Kim Hye-soon's poetry are expressed through a death consciousness and solidarity consciousnes. The voice of death, represented by the pig, symbolizes the violence and death of human society. Solidarity consciousnes, represented by the sea anemones, is expressed through the image of a free body and the transformational movement of diverse identities.
