Abstract
The purpose of this study is to integrate analyses of learners’ on-task behavior, instructor discourse, and instructor movement within the classroom in order to provide a more multidimensional understanding of classroom interaction. To achieve this aim, one class session from an undergraduate course offered at a four-year private university in Seoul was analyzed. The session included 29 undergraduate students and lasted approximately 68 minutes. Trained raters coded the on-task and off-task behaviors of 10 selected students and categorized the instructor’s discourse into instructor-centered and learner-centered discourse. In addition, the instructor’s movement patterns in the classroom were examined using the Mondrian Transcription software and the Interaction Geography Slicer. The results revealed that the instructor’s discourse was distributed relatively evenly throughout the class, and a causal relationship was identified between learner’s task engagement behaviors and the instructor’s discourse. Furthermore, the instructor tended to occupy specific areas of the classroom when employing key discourse strategies. These findings highlight the importance of interpreting classroom interactions through a multidimensional lens that integrates behavioral, discursive, and spatial information. In particular, analyses incorporating the instructor’s movement trajectory and temporal-spatial patterns contributed to a more nuanced interpretation understanding of the structure and flow of the lesson.
