Abstract

Learning analytics (LA), which refers to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and communication of learner-related data, has gained increasing attention as a promising approach for accurately identifying students’ learning status and delivering immediate, individualized feedback to all learners. This systematic review analyzes international empirical studies that have applied LA-based systems to support feedback in elementary education. We coded the selected publications using an analytical framework that identifies (1) publication trends, (2) research contexts, (3) subjects and learning contexts, (4) feedback types, (5) data collection and analysis methods, and (6) outcome variables. We found that research on LA-based feedback systems in elementary education has been expanding, but has primarily targeted upper-grade students, STEM subjects, and web-based learning environments. In addition, feedback generation in LA-based system largely relied on quiz or test results and log data, with descriptive analyses and statistics-driven algorithms as the dominant analytic approaches. Most studies emphasized quantitative methods and were limited by short intervention periods, small sample sizes, and an absence of diverse data sets. Future research should develop more refined feedback designs that align with diverse subject-specific characteristics and core learning elements of the elementary curriculum, while exploring digital platforms that offer various feedback types. In addition, it is recommended that future studies incorporate more diverse data sources and employ advanced learning analytics techniques for feedback generation.
