Abstract

This study aims to explore the structural relationship between experiences of citizenship education and political participation intention among elementary school students, with a particular focus on the mediating role of political efficacy and the moderated mediating effect of school participation activities. Utilizing data from the 2023 National Youth Policy Institute’s survey, the study analyzed responses from 2,848 students in grades 4 through 6. Regression analyses and moderated mediation tests were conducted using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS macro. The results indicated that experiences with citizenship education showed a statistically significant positive relationship with students’ political participation intention, and political efficacy partially mediated this relationship. In addition, school participation activities functioned as a moderating factor, as the strength of the relationship varied according to the level of political efficacy. Based on these findings, this study provides foundational data for discussions on curriculum development and school practices, and suggests implications that can be referenced in future research and practice.
