Abstract

This study examined the impact of adolescents’ political participation on internal political efficacy, with a focus on the mediating effect of political experience through social media. Data from the 2021 Youth Social and Political Participation Survey conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute were used, and a total of 1,040 middle and high school students nationwide were included in the analysis. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and correlation analysis. Hierarchical regression analysis and mediation effect testing, including the Sobel test, were conducted to verify the mediating effect. The results indicated that adolescents’ political participation increased internal political efficacy, and that political experience through social media partially mediated this relationship. These findings suggested that both online and offline political participation experiences had independent positive effects on adolescents’ internal political efficacy, with online experiences potentially amplifying the effects of offline participation. This study was significant in providing practical and policy implications for promoting youth political participation in both online and offline contexts.
