Abstract
Along with the Vairocana Buddha Statue at Daejeokgwangjeon, the Wooden Vairocana Buddha Statue in the Dharma Treasure Hall of Haeinsa Temple is considered so precious and the oldest wooden Buddha statues in Korea, created at the late Shilla and early Goryeo periods(925-950). That is, the inscription on the board inside the robe of the Vairocana Buddha statue in the Beopbojeon (Dharma Treasure Hall) was made recently, revealing the truth that it is not the oldest(最古) wooden Buddha statue made in Shilla in 883. Therefore, all studies that were written and based on the inscription of year 883 need to be reconsidered. By analyzing the iconographic and stylistic features, it has been confirmed that this statue belongs to the second quarter of the 10th century (925-950), corresponding with the emergence of new realistic Buddhist statues made of iron during that period, revealing that it was a Buddhist statue of a style that appeared in the late Shilla and early Goryeo periods. Also, the Vairocana Buddha Statue in Daejeokgwangjeon shares the same iconographic and stylistic features as the Beopbojeon Vairocana Buddha Statue, suggesting that both statues were created in the same period by the same artist. In addition, this Vairocana Buddha statue in the Beopbojeon is different from the theory that it is the oldest wooden Buddha statue from the ink-and-wash creation record, but based on the analysis of the iconographic features, style features, and the historical context of Haeinsa Temple, it is evaluated to have great significance as the oldest wooden Buddha statue from the late Silla and early Goryeo periods (925-950) in Korea, and therefore it is judged appropriate to elevate it to national treasure status.
