Abstract

This study reevaluates the construction date and architectural significance of Daeungjeon Hall at Unheungsa Temple in Goseong, South Gyeongsang Province. Once thought to be from the 18th century, it is now confirmed to have been built in 1683, based on plaque inscriptions, altar writings, and dendrochronological analysis. Through the "Unheungsa Gaegeumgyeomsajeok" (雲興寺改⾦兼事蹟), this study identifies Buddhist activities and patrons at the temple in the late Joseon period. Records suggest a temple layout structured around two main axes: the mid-17th-century Geungnakjeon area in the west, and the late-17th-century Daeungjeon area in the east. The original Geungnakjeon was relocated and rebuilt at the current Bogwangjeon site. Architecturally, the five-kan-wide, three-kan-deep Daeungjeon in multi-bracket style is unique among its surviving counterparts for including gwigongpo. The variation between front and rear brackets raises questions about original design versus later renovation. Lastly, the involvement of Venerable Yeonghyeop in both Gwangyang and Goseong suggests the possible existence of itinerant monastic builders active along Korea's southern coastal region during the 17th century.
