Abstract
This study examines the Gamrodo (Nectar Ritual Painting ⽢露圖), painted in 1730, which was part of a major religious and artistic program that included the Three Buddhas Assembly Painting, Avalokiteśvara Painting, and a large outdoor Gwaebul banner. These works were overseen by the renowned monk painter Uigyeom , who played a leading role in Buddhist painting of the period. This paper explores the formal features of the Unheungsa Gamrodo produced in 1730—its composition, iconography, use of color, inscriptional elements (bangje ), and figure arrangement—while also examining the reorganization of the Buddhist painter community (hwaseung ) during this period, situating both within the broader context of Uigyeom’s oeuvre By comparing this painting with earlier works such as the 1719 Yeongsanhoesangdo and Palsangdo produced at the same temple, and with later works like the 1736 Gamrodo at Seonamsa temple, this study reveals both the continuity and evolution of style within Uigyeom’s workshop. Particular attention is given to the role of Chaein , a junior monk-painter, who emerged as a key figure during the 1730 project. His increasing influence marks a generational shift within the Uigyeom school, as evidenced by subtle stylistic differences in composition and coloring. The collaborative and at times divided authorship of the painting reflects broader structural changes in 18th-century Buddhist art production. The Unheungsa Gamrodo thus represents not only a quintessential example of mid-Joseon Buddhist painting but also a transitional work shaped by internal transformations in workshop leadership, artistic authorship, and stylistic innovation. It provides valuable insights into painterly networks and the dynamics of large-scale temple commissions during this period.
