Abstract
In this study, the use of speech level in conversations between friends of Japanese female high school students was investigated by comparing conversations between friends of Japanese university female friends. First, looking at the use of the sentence-final speech level in conversations between friends of Japanese female high school students, the ratio of use of non-polite forms is about 60.2%, so it can be said that the basic speech level in conversations between the friends is non-polite form. As for polite form, not only “desho:” for asking for consent and confirmation, but also polite form for conveying objective facts (information) were used, and that can be interpreted as a noteworthy feature although the ratio of polite form is low. Next, looking at the use of the speech level from the viewpoint of lexicon between friends of Japanese female high school students, ‘honorific forms for listeners’ were used six times for the purpose of fun, not for its original function to show respect or politeness in utterances. On the other hand, in conversations between the friends , there were several examples of using polite form in utterances when the sentence final speech level was the incomplete utterance; it was difficult to say that the interlocutor was recognized as a direct listener in the contexts, and there was no case where it was used in first meeting conversations with the intention to show an explicit attitude toward the listener, which can be said to be a conventional function of the polite form used in utterance when the sentence final speech level was the incomplete utterance.
