‘동물-되기’ 담론으로 살펴본 동물현존과 동물성의 창출방식

극에서 살아있는 동물이 등장하는 것은 드문 일이지만, 20세기 중반 반재현적 연극 흐름 속에서 동물이 공연자로 등장하는 동물퍼포먼스의 사례들은 종종 목격되어 왔다. 대표적으로 요셉 보이스, 마리나 아브라모비치, 레이첼 로젠탈, 헤르만 니취 등과 같은 아방가르드 예술가들이 언급될 수 있을 것인데, 이들은 이성중심적 인간과 재현중심적 예술의 헤게모니에 대한 저항과 비판으로서 살아있는 동물을 무대 위로 호출하는 도발을 감행했다. 동물에의 주목은 이성이 연극무대를 지배해온 오랜 시간 동안 자취를 감췄던 동물들의 귀환이라는 점에서 매우 주목할 만한 사건이었다. 그런데 무대로 동물이 소환되는 동물퍼포먼스의 양상은 90년대를 경유하며 이전과 다른 양상을 드러낸다. 위에 언급한 예술가들로 대표되는 90년대 이전 동물퍼포먼스들이 길들여지지 않은 야생동물의 언캐니한 현존 그 자체, 예측할 수 없고 통제하기 어려운 동물의 본능적 행위와 원시적 생명성, 날 것의 에너지를 그대로 매개하고자 했다면, 90년대 이후 시도된 동물퍼포먼스는 동물의 몸성이 공연의 내재적 물질로 활용되고 미학적 드라마투르기의 과정을 거친다는 점에서 변별된 지점을 보이는 것이다. 본고는 이러한 측면에 착안하여 오늘날 연극무대에서의 살아있는 동물현존 및 동물성의 창출양상에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 미국과 유럽의 연극학계를 중심으로 수행되어온 ‘동물연극학’의 연구동향을 간략하게 살피고, 질 들뢰즈와 펠릭스 가타리의 ‘동물-되기’ 담론에 기대어 연극에서의 동물현존 및 동물과의 만남으로 촉발되는 변형적 사건과 경험에 대해 분석할 것이다.
Abstract
It is quite unlikely to watch onstage appearances of animal, but animal theatre/ performance, which invites live animal as a performer, has been often appeared since mid-twentieth century. Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramović, Rachel Rosenthal, Hermnn Nitsch and other avant-garde artists are popular examples to look at. They have experimented such a provocative performance to call live animal onto the stage as a way to resist the theatrical hegemony centered on humanism and representation. This attention of sort on the animal was a quite noteworthy phenomenon, because animal presence has been totally erased out on stage for centuries since rationality dominated the western world and theatrical stage. By the way, German theatre scholar Erika Fischer-Lichte points out that animal appearances onstage multiplied since the 1990s. The performances before the 1990s -such as the examples mentioned above- tended to focus on the so-called uncanny appearances of wild animal in himself; unpredictable and uncontrollable instinctive behavior, primitive vitality, material energy and so on. However, in the performances after 1990s, the animal corporeality and materiality such as figure, skin, sound, smell, muscle or movement are actively applied as an immanent material and gone through the aesthetic dramaturgy. This study aims to look at the onstage animal presence in the contemporary animal performances. To do it, this thesis starts from brief surveying the academic landscape of animal theatre studies of U.S. and Europe since 2000, and ultimately goes for studying the animal presence and animality -transformative/metamorphosis event and performative experience- based on the philosophical thought of Jill Deleuze and Felix Guattari: becoming-animal.
