Abstract
This study examines the roles that translation plays in fandom by drawing on the concept of ‘affective labour’ as a way of understanding fan translation. Specifically, this study uses BTS’s ARMY as a case study to illustrate how fan translators operate as cultural agents in shaping fan experiences and mediating media content. The study reveals that the innovative translation practices applied by the Korean ARMY contribute to shaping the BTS ‘universe’ and cultural archiving within the fandom. This study argues that such translation by the Korean ARMY reflects their recognition of and affinity towards the foreign ARMY and helps international ARMY members engage more effectively with BTS and their music, ultimately contributing to the formation of a transnational community.
