본 논문은 고대 그리스 미술에서 나타나는 헤라클레스-게라스 도상에 관한 고찰이다. 게라스가 묘사된 도기화는 현재까지 모두 6점이 전해지며 이탈리아에서 발견되었다. 이들 도기에서 게라스는 힘의 전형이자 뛰어난 영웅 헤라클레스와 함께 묘사되었다. 게라스와 헤라클레스의 만남은 신화적으로 매우 드문 경우이다. 헤라클레스는 무방비 상태의 노쇠하고 연약한 노인을 상대로 대결하는 구도로 묘사되어 있다. 이는 헤라클레스 도상 전통에서 영웅적인 행동에 부합하는지 의문이 제기될 수 있는 부분이다. 또한 게라스의 모습은 종종 우스꽝스럽고 기괴하기까지 하다. 본 연구는 대략 기원전 5세기 이탈리아반도에서 인기를 끌었던 것으로 보이는 헤라클레스와 게라스 대결 장면이 묘사된 아티카 도기화를 중심으로 살펴본다. 또한 이 도상을 ‘노년 퇴치자’로 이해할 수 있다는 점에 주목하여, 관련 문헌적 출처와 사튀로스극과의 연관성을 바탕으로 도상학적 분석을 수행한다. 이를 통해 헤라클레스와 게라스가 시각예술 속에서 어떠한 방식으로 구현되었는지 고찰한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyse the Hercules-Geras iconography found in ancient Greek Six examples of pottery depicting Geras have been discovered to date, all in Italy. In these works, Geras is depicted alongside Herakles, the epitome of strength and an outstanding hero. The encounter between Geras and Herakles is a very rare occurrence in mythology. Herakles is depicted in a confrontation with an elderly man who is defenceless, frail, and weak. This raises questions about whether such a depiction aligns with the heroic actions typically associated with the Herakles iconography tradition. Additionally, Geras’ appearance is often comical and grotesque. This study focuses on Attic vase paintings depicting the confrontation between Herakles and Geras, which appears to have enjoyed popularity on the Italian peninsula around the fifth century BC. On the basis of literary sources and the connection with satyr plays, it undertakes an iconographic analysis of this imagery, which may be understood as representing the “vanquisher of old age.” Through this, the study examines the ways in which Herakles and Geras were rendered in the visual arts.
