Abstract

Mathematics is often regarded as a universal language, yet ancient Greek mathematical texts reflect intellectual traditions deeply rooted in specific historical and cultural contexts. This paper reviews the history of Archimedes’ translations from the Renaissance to the present, showing how the aims of translation have shifted-from restoring the original text to recreating intellectual experience, and from producing a single authoritative edition to adopting multi-layered representations. Building on this historical trajectory and the present state of Korean scholarship, the paper proposes four methodological principles for translating mathematical classics: (1) fidelity to the original text, preserving its stylistic and logical structures; (2) terminological consistency, ensuring nuanced concepts are conveyed systematically; (3) multi-layered translation and commentary, accommodating diverse readerships with literal, adaptive, and annotated versions; and (4) collaborative and iterative revision, treating translations as living texts developed through interdisciplinary cooperation. These principles offer a constructive resolution to the long-standing tension between fidelity and readability, while pointing toward concrete directions for future Korean translations of classical scientific works.
