Abstract
This study aims to interpret Athenian perspectives on Persians and the Persian Wars by analyzing the ‘Eurymedon Vase’, linking these views with sexual discourse and historical context. On this vase, the Greek is depicted as an erastes and the Persian as an eromenos, juxtaposing dominance and immaturity, victory and defeat, excessive masculinity and a lack thereof within a sexualized power dynamic. This contrast serves as a symbolic representation of the mid-5th century BCE power struggle between Athens and Persia in the eastern Mediterranean, exemplified by the Battle of the Eurymedon. The Greek figure is portrayed as an active victor, yet one who has lost sexual restraint and is overwhelmed by excessive masculinity, while the Persian is depicted as a passive, defeated figure unable to control his emotions. Additionally, both figures subtly critique the uncontrollable and irrational violence resulting from prolonged warfare. This vase may serve as a prescient indication of the ‘Peace of Callias,’ reflecting a desire for an end to the conflict even before a formal social consensus for peace had fully emerged.
