Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore works based on Greek mythology in modern ceramic art and to derive various creative possibilities through mythology. To this end. the expression method and symbolic meaning of ancient Greek pottery were explored. The characteristics of modern ceramic art following ancient Greek mythology are as follows. First, Katya Keisik and Katsuyo Aoki expressed the advanced form of ancient Greek pottery decoration through three-dimensional format. This allowed a bold expression method beyond the limits of clay’s physical properties, and maximized the mystery by using one’s concept through a medium of myth. Second, the appearance of Janice Nanuris and Clementine Keith-Roch’s works seems to be a reproduction of the ancient Greek iconography, but they distinguished themselves through the fusion of the past and presentation methods and expressed the artist’s unique formative beauty. Third, Grayson Perry and Grag Payce converted pottery into a medium for telling stories. Unlike the mythological scenes painted in ancient Greek pottery that contained the symbolic meaning of the mythological place used in the time, various themes were intuitively expressed and reinterpreted. In addition, Grag Payce sought to expand the scope of ceramic art by combining it with photography technology. This study is meaningful in that Greek and Roman mythology was reinterpreted in modern ceramic art and expanded in various meanings. Considering that ceramic art using the original form of ancient art has developed into a wide range of conceptual art, it is hoped that it will lead to the expansion of creative expression methods using mythical imagination in the field of ceramic art.
