Abstract

Gorgon Medusa appears to have been one of the favorite themes in the Greek vase paintings. During the archaic period, the image of the Medusa, specially the Gorgoneion as a talisman, reflects the ambivalent attitude of the people to the supernatural power of the daimon, which originated from the primitive religion being both the object of fear and the source of protection. But with the innovation in the Greek culture in general, on the basis of the newly established athenian democracy, the image of Medusa also underwent a radical change. The role of Medusa in the represented narrative is not a hybrid monster of magical power in the frontal view any more, but a victim of the heroic labour of Perseus: the new type of sleeping gorgon appears; the threatening Gorgoneion on the shield of warriors doesn’t give a direct look on the viewer; the humanized Medusa even conveys ‘the classical beauty’. Alienating the time in the represented image from the time of the viewer, the paintings in the classical period exclude the direct encounter of the viewer with image, and allow him to take part in the represented event only as a voyeur. The viewer, then forgetting himself, empathizes with the represented event, more particularly with the main agent in the scene. This is the very theatrical effect of the art of representation that the paintings in this period have newly introduced, and the beginning of the pictorial illusion of the space which the western art history get to succeed henceforth. In this study, I’d like to interpret a set of changes in the mode of representation of Medusa around the 5th century b.c. from this aspect, and thereby reexamine the political function this period gave to the art.
