Abstract

This study investigates the current practices and challenges of heritage Japanese education in early childhood within Korean-Japanese multicultural families, and explores directions for future support. While previous research has largely focused on school-aged children, relatively little attention has been given to early childhood, a period of particular importance for language development. A survey of 106 Japanese mothers was conducted to examine home language use, cultural practices, parental awareness and concerns, and specific educational needs. The results indicate that Korean tends to dominate in the home due to mothers’ high proficiency in Korean and fathers’ limited ability in Japanese. Additional challenges included minimal exposure to Japanese outside the home, insufficient parental knowledge and practical experience, and limited access to relevant information and support resources. Six conditions were identified as essential for effective heritage Japanese education in early childhood: (1) parents’ conscious involvement, (2) intentional separation of language use, (3) adequate quality and quantity of Japanese input at home, (4) children’s recognition of the value of Japanese, (5) opportunities for contact with Japanese culture, and (6) the presence of supportive social networks. The findings emphasize the need for parent guidance, increased exposure to Japanese language and culture, and strengthened external support networks. Overall, the study suggests that effective heritage language education requires not only family engagement but also broader societal support beginning in early childhood, and underscores the importance of longitudinal and practice-based research to validate and refine educational strategies.
