Abstract
This study aims to investigate the perceptions and practices of Japanese parents in Japanese-Korean international marriages in Korea regarding the education of Japanese as a heritage language through interviews. Although some negative views were observed in the analysis of the survey results, all five parents who participated in the survey recognized the necessity of Japanese as a heritage language education and were practicing it with a positive attitude. However, their practices were not always successful, and the following challenges were identified. (1) Children’s proficiency in Korean surpasses their Japanese ability, resulting in parent-child communication in Korean; (2) Children show little sustained interest in learning Japanese at home; (3) The Japanese parent often feels solely responsible for providing a Japanese language environment and becomes isolated in the process. These issues stem from broader family language policy dynamics. As potential solutions, the study proposes (1) spousal support and explicitly communicating language goals to children; (2) avoiding isolation by joining Japanese heritage language groups or gatherings with other Japanese families.
