Abstract

This paper begins with the need to reconsider the year 1987. The fragmented appropriation of history has confined 1987 to the 19-day period from June 10 to 28, leaving only the memory of June in our collective consciousness. In other words, 1987 is a point in time where excess and absence of memory coexist. Therefore, it is necessary to re-approach 1987 not merely as the June Democratic Uprising but as a historical turning point marked by transformative movements, such as the July-August Great Workers' Struggle and the presidential election protests. Events like these, which have been forgotten or left out of memory, must be restored to their rightful significance. In this context, I aim to reread Dongteuneun Saebyeok (The Dawning Morning), published in 1988. This work views 1987 as a period of civic revolution and refers to a series of transformative movements as the “Great Democratization Struggle of '87.” The book is organized into three parts: Part I features works that delve into the historical meaning of the June Democratic Uprising; Part II deals with the wage increase struggles of July and August, a key aspect of the workers' fight for real democratization; and Part III presents works that depict how people overcame the despair and frustration of the presidential election struggle and stepped once again onto the hopeful path of national and popular liberation. This structure reflects the perspective of people at the time who wished to remember 1987 not just as the June Democratic Uprising but as a process of democratization. Moreover, the editor's belief that literature must urgently engage with the pressing issues of its time and wrestle with them reflects the literary consciousness of the era. Accordingly, this paper analyzes how Dongteuneun Saebyeok represents the June Democratic Uprising, the July-August workers' struggles, and the presidential election protests, viewing 1987 as a historical turning point of social transformation. It first examines how the fear and sense of debt evoked by deaths caused by state violence became a vital psychological driving force behind the transformative movements since 1980, leading to the formation and fragmentation of the subject. Then, it explores how love in these literary works opens up the possibility of rupturing the subject's inner division.
