Abstract
This paper aims to show how philosophy of human rights can help address the challenges faced by school unification education engaging with human rights. School unification education encounters a dilemma: it cannot acknowledge the relativity of human rights, yet it also finds it problematic to fully emphasize their universality. The idea of a dialogue on human rights offers a potential way forward, but its educational relevance requires deeper philosophical reflection. To this end, this paper examines Jeffrey Flynn’s theory of human rights. Flynn synthesizes the approaches of John Rawls, Charles Taylor, and Jürgen Habermas to establish a six-stage model of a intercultural dialogue on human rights. With appropriate adaptation, this model can be applied to the context of school unification education. The resulting model of a dialogue on human rights between South and North Korea illustrates how philosophical reflections on human rights resolve the dilemmas of school unification education. Ultimately, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the philosophy of human rights can provide concrete contributions to real-world discourse on human rights, moving beyond abstract speculation.
