Abstract

This article explores new approaches necessary to revitalize educationn for democratic citizenship under the changed conditions of Korean democracy, including the rise of the far right following the ‘December 3rd Insurrection’. First, it examines the old yet new challenge of ‘fascist politics’ that our democracy now faces amid the global spread of far-right populism (II). It then reviews the limitations of our liberal democratic model, which underlies this challenge, from the perspective of the value of ‘republic’ (III). Building on this foundation, we will introduce the framework for a new approach called ‘Republican Civic Education’ (IV). This approach seeks to activate civic education in our society by adopting the ‘Beutelsbach Consensus’—long emulated from Germany-in a manner suited to Korea's current conditions, while also addressing its limitations.
