Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the concepts of “Qingkong(淸空)” in Jiang Kui(姜夔)’s ci and “Zhishi(質實)” in Wu Wenying(吳文英)’s ci, as presented by Zhang Yan(張炎) in 『Ciyuan(詞源)』, using natural language processing. An analysis of the character usage patterns in the ci of Jiang Kui, Wu Wenying, and Zhang Yan revealed that Wu Wenying’s unique character ratio (20.5%) was higher than that of Jiang Kui (3.9%) and Zhang Yan (11.0%), and that the ratio of unique characters correspondingly increased among high-frequency character groups. This indicates that the higher the frequency of a character, the more strongly it reflects the personal writing style of each poet, which highlights the importance of focusing on high-frequency characters. An analysis based on the top 10% of high-frequency characters in each poet’s works showed that Jiang Kui’s ci had an overwhelmingly high proportion of common characters, whereas Wu Wenying’s unique character ratio was about 3.24 times higher than Jiang Kui’s. This difference suggests that Jiang Kui’s ci, largely composed of familiar characters, may be more readily readable to the audience, while Wu Wenying’s ci, which employs a wide range of expressions covering diverse semantic fields, appears more ornate but potentially harder to comprehend. This finding provides an important clue in explaining why Zhang Yan likened Jiang Kui’s ci to “clouds drifting above the fields” and Wu Wenying’s ci to a “Qibao–craft pavilion”. This study attempts to integrate quantitative analysis into traditional ci studies to more concretely clarify the essence of Qingkong and Zhishi.
