전통유교와 현대 자유주의의 핵심적 대립은 ‘자아실현’에 대한 상이한 이해에서 비롯되는 것이었다. ‘자아실현’은 동서고금 누구나 원하는간절한 소망이라 할 수 있다. 문제는 ‘자아실현’란 본래 두 차원에서 이해할 수 있다는 점이다. 우리는 자신만의 독특한 개성을 실현하고자 원할 수도 있고, 인간의 보편적 본성을 실현하고자 원할 수도 있다. 그런데 개인의 독특한 개성만을 강조하고 인간의 보편적 본성을 무시한다면, 그 때의 자아실현이란 프롬⋅매킨타이어⋅테일러 등이 지적한 것처럼 ‘소외, 자아도취, 멋대로 자유’ 등 각종 폐단을 야기하는 것이다. 그렇다면 우리는 ‘인간의 보편적 본성’에 기초하여 ‘개인의 독특한 개성’을 발휘할 때만이 참다운 자아실현이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이는 인륜의 한계를 넘지 않는 범위에서 자유를 누린다는 뜻이요, 또한 가치의 객관적 척도를 존중한다는 뜻이다. 우리는 그 모범적 사례를 공자의 ‘和而不同’이나 ‘從心所欲不踰矩’에서 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
At the heart of the conflict between Confucianism and liberalism is their different understandings of self-realization. Self-realization is keenly desired by everyone, regardless of culture or era. The problem is that it can be understood in two ways. Some of us may want to realize our own unique personalities; others may want to realize universal human nature. If, however we emphasize only the unique personality of the individual while ignoring universal human nature, the self-realization that results will, as pointed out by Fromm, MacIntyre and Taylor, cause alienation, narcissism and reckless freedom. If this is the case, we can only achieve true self-realization by developing our unique, individual personalities based on universal human nature. This means enjoying freedom within the boundaries of Human Relations and respecting objective value yardsticks. We can find perfect examples of this in Confucius' notions of seeking harmony but not uniformity and following what the heart desires without transgressing what is right.
