Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore what makes learners active in an asynchronous discussion and how students interact online in a student-centered environment. For the purpose, one class was used that consisted of nine students. For the purpose of this study, researchers observed the class activities and analyzed the contents of discussion boards to understand in depth structure of learners learning. Then, researchers conducted an online survey to verify the results of the content analysis. The results indicated learners' internal motivation, peer reaction, and instructor's student-like participation pattern mainly influenced on student' voluntarily participation in the asynchronous online discussion. The results of this survey will be helpful for practitioners and researchers who are interested in using asynchronous online discussion as a learning tool by providing some aspects highly related with learners' active participation.
