Abstract
This study examines how olfaction can serve as an artistic practice and a means of recording memory, emotion, and community. To this end, it analyses Sissel Tolaas’s Smellscape project and Koo Jeong A’s exhibition, 《Koo Jeong A: Odorama City》. Since the modern era, the sense of smell has been marginalised as a regulated and disciplined sensory faculty under hygiene and cleanliness ideologies, while vision has been privileged as the superior sense representing rationality and reason. This visual supremacy has shaped a dominant epistemology of visuality, both within and beyond the realm of art. However, the celebration of visuality, which reached its peak in modernist art, was disrupted by the emergence of conceptual and process-based art practices in the 1960s. This enabled a re-evaluation of sensory hierarchies. In this context, Tolaas and Koo construct alternative olfactory art, invoking the past and present, urban spaces, memories, emotions and the traces and presence of others through smell. Their olfactory archival practices open up the possibility of forming affective communities and sensing the presence of others. Ultimately, they function as counter-archival gestures that transform olfactory experiences from markers of exclusion and aversion into agents of empathy and solidarity. This paper argues that such practices exemplify a critical mode of contemporary art that demands an expanded ethics of the senses.
