Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how utopia, long regarded as an object of aspiration in art, has been expanded and diversified in contemporary art through various discourses and interpretive frameworks. As finite beings with physical bodies, humans are subjects of desire who dream of an ideal world beyond the life they inhabit in reality. Utopia, named U-topia, refers to a place that does not exist in reality and has generally been discussed as a future-oriented ideal. However, this study also focuses on artistic practices that reframe memories—constantly pushed into the past—by reversing temporal flow and integrating them with spatial hybridity. In this context, the topos as a spatial concept intersects with consciousness and memory within the flow of time, envisioning nostalgic utopias and heterotopias in which past, present, and future are intertwined. Nostalgia and utopia are concepts continually reconstructed through human memory and imagination, influencing perceptions of both the present and the future. This research combines theoretical inquiry with case analyses of contemporary artists to examine how the dialectics of memory are visualized in art. The findings reveal that nostalgia and utopia operate not as static ideals but as dynamic concepts that expose the gap between reality and ideals, thereby generating new aesthetic and political spaces. Ultimately, contemporary art does not merely depict utopian visions but creates conditions in which their possibilities can be sensorially and critically experienced by the audience.
