Abstract
This paper analyzes Anicka Yi's the sense of smell works focusing on the concept of ‘metabolism’. Throughout Anicka Yi's the sense of smell works, which uses smell as its primary medium, the concept of ‘metabolism’ emerges as a key concept as the artist attempts to think and imagine the connection between the biological act of smelling and the issue of invisible boundaries between human and human, nonhuman and human, and organism and machine. Smell has been socially and culturally conditioned. The sense of smell, a primal sense, conventionally defines a variety of unverbalized smells through existing socio-cultural ideas and consciousness. According to Anicka Yi, the sense of smell, which functions every moment through breathing, is linked to both metabolic processes in the biological sense of inhalation and exhalation and metabolic processes in the social, political and cultural sense of inclusion and exclusion. This paper explores how metabolism, in a broad sense, is an important concept that runs through Anicka Yi's work, ‘The Sense of Smell,’ specifically focusing on the political boundaries of smell, 'biofiction' as a boundary-breaker between nonhuman and human, and 'porous ecosystem' as a symbiotic relationship between organisms and machines.
