Abstract

This article aims to clarify how Sakamoto Takao, a Japanese political thinker, argued that “the expression of the will of the entire people = democracy” manifested itself as “postwar ideology.” Sometimes referred to as “Sakamoto’s postwar ideology,” its content was a reconstruction of “Japan’s history theory.” Following in the footsteps of Maruyama, Sakamoto modified and utilized Maruyama’s use of Carl Schmitt’s theory of the state, and imitated Watsuji’s interpretation of Vico and Herder’s “theory of the general will” to construct “postwar ideology,” which he claimed was the restoration of Japanese subjectivity that spoke of Japan’s “history.” Ultimately, Sakamoto’s postwar ideology aimed to transcend the West while asserting the uniqueness of Japanese-style democracy and the symbolic emperor, but it was essentially a “reconstruction of Japanese-style democracy and national identity.”
