Abstract
This study analyzes how the intra-party conflicts within the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) affected the unfolding of the crisis of democracy in the Weimar Republic. Previous research highlight the inevitability of the Republic’s collapse due to structural factors such as economic crises and political institutions. However, the political trajectory of the Republic was dynamic. The SPD determined its political line through struggles between the faction prioritizing political stability and that advocating for working-class interests. Its decisions significantly influenced the course of the Weimar democracy. The SPD initially prioritized democracy until the mid-1920s, but it turned to class interests and underestimated the threat posed by anti-democratic forces in the late 1920s, thereby contributing to democratic backsliding. This suggests that internal struggles within major political parties can be a key variable in explaining the course of democratic crises.
