Abstract

Masan Hanil Girls’ High School (hereafter MHGHS), affiliated to Hanil Synthetic Fiber Co. Ltd. (hereafter HSF), opened a history museum to celebrate its 50th anniversary in early 2024. Following its founding in 1974, for over 19 years tens of thousands of girls were recruited by MHGHS as not only students, but also factory workers. This study aims to analyze the politics of memory of the MHGHS graduates, who sought to differentiate themselves from female factory workers (so called “yeogong”) of other companies in Masan. By examining the exhibited materials at the museum as well as an oral history book, this study aims to explore the thoughts and perceptions of the graduates who wish to be remembered as “students who excelled in their studies from all over the country” and “girls who overcame any trial and hardship through study and hard work.” This study focuses on the complex and gendered power relations that were politically imposed on them. It expects to shed light on their narratives of growth, highlighting how they conformed to such power structures while also striving to fulfill their personal desires.
