Abstract
In relation to the Japan's strategical direction for the 21st century, lots of researchers and journalists of Korea or China tend to worry about the possibility of its return to conservatism or right-extremism. This paper aims to show the divergence of the Japanese intellectuals' atmosphere concerning this theme by focusing on the debate between Kang Sangjung and Sakamoto Takao. Professor Sakamoto, who was teaching Japanese political philosophy at Gakushuin University before his abrupt death recently, favors the remilitarization of Japan in the context of political realism. Whereas Professor Kang, who is teaching at Tokyo University, streeses mutual cooperation on the East-Asian level. On the basis of these typology, this paper suggests that there could be four types of strategical discourse, such as statism which is represented by Sakamoto, mercantilism which emphasizes the status quo, open nationalism and regionalism which is echoed by Prof. Kang. Among them, it seems that open nationalism or regionalism is considered as the possible alternative for Japan's future by most of Japanese bureaucrats rather than the statism.
