Abstract

This study reinterprets Hyun Sang-yun’s (1893–?) critique of tradition in the 1910s and his post-liberation view on Confucianism within a continuous framework. Previous scholarship has tended to divide Hyun’s thought into two separate phases: his youth as a pro-Western advocate of national empowerment through modernization, and his later years as a period of positive reassessment of Confucianism. However, Hyun consistently rejected the wholesale abolition of Confucianism through the distinction between Bon(本, essence) and Mal(末, superficiality), limiting his criticism to the accumulated maladies of Neo-Confucianism in the late Joseon period. By doing so, this study shifts the interpretive framework of Hyun’s intellectual history from “rupture” to “continuity,” illuminating the complex interplay of tradition and critique among the new intellectual class in colonial Korea. During the 1910s, as seen in Hakjigwang and Cheongchun, Hyun advocated strengthening national power and liberating the individual through Western-style modernization. In this process, he criticized, in particular, the speculative formalism and exclusive dominance of late Joseon Neo-Confucianism, which he saw as obstructing material civilization and progress in science and industry. By the 1940s, Hyun clearly distinguished the “essence” and “superficiality” of Confucianism as moral principles and Neo-Confucian ideological formalism, respectively. While his focus in the 1910s was on critiquing the latter, in the 1940s he came to re-evaluate the moral dimension of Confucian thought, especially the teachings of Confucius and Mencius. Furthermore, the new historical context of national liberation allowed Hyun to express a more confident and optimistic outlook on the future role of Confucianism.
