Abstract
Ahn Ho-sang's doctoral dissertation is a study that reconstructs Hermann Lotze's concept of 'relation' through the Neo-Kantian Bruno Bauch's interpretation. In the modern era dominated by an atomistic worldview, Lotze elevated 'relation' from a mere secondary connection to a fundamental principle of being and knowledge. His innovation lay in viewing relation from the perspective of 'validity.' In logic, relation is the essence of judgment as an objective state of affairs, and concepts were reinterpreted as complexes and functions of categorical validity-relations. In ontology, to exist means to 'stand in relation,' and these relations are elucidated from the perspective of validity that transcends space and time. In epistemology, relation is completed as a transcendental condition mediating subject and object. Ahn Ho-sang argues that Lotze's interpretation and reconstruction of the concept of relation contains totalitarian dangers. Expressions such as "one world-ground" imply a monistic structure that subordinates the individual to the whole, and by defining validity as a "fundamental concept that cannot be explained," the possibility of criticism is blocked. Bauch's Nazi ideology and Ahn Ho-sang's statism can be read as cases of practical appropriation of this concept of relation. This paper aims at a detailed critical analysis of his doctoral dissertation, which is the root of Ahn Ho-sang's thought.
