Abstract
This study explores the religious life of Sicheongyo believers through donation and loan books from the Anseong Church, one of the denomination’s major branches. Sicheongyo experienced significant early growth, rivaling Cheondogyo but later declined due to internal divisions. Despite its historical importance, research and records on Sicheongyo remain scarce. In this context, this study aims to reveal their religious life as it appears in actual records by examining the books of Anseong Church. This study is structured as follows: the introduction outlines the research background and significance; Section 2 explains the nature of the source materials; Section 3 analyzes the data and identifies four key characteristics; and the conclusion summarizes the findings. The main sources are six books preserved at the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Hall, which document donations related to sacred rice and rituals, as well as loans made to members and local residents. These records offer a rare glimpse into the everyday religious and social life of Sicheongyo believers. The analysis reveals four major findings. First, the Anseong Church maintained a close relationship with the central church, actively responding to its directives and donation requests. Second, the believers’ consistent offerings, such as sacred rice donations, reflected their commitment to “su-do-sil-jeok (修道實蹟 actualizing the cultivation of the Dao),” the practical implementation of religious teachings. Third, local churches played a social role by managing loans and organizing community functions like funeral societies. Fourth, a mismatch was observed between statistical church size and actual donations or membership, suggesting limitations in central data collection. In sum, this study demonstrates that the Anseong Church of Sicheongyo functioned not only as a collection of religious spaces but also as community centers where faith, social life, and institutional ties intersected.
