Abstract
This article explores the linguistic characteristics and issues of translation in Han Kang’s The Greek Lesson sthrough the lens of Henri Meschonnic’s poetics of rhythm. The novel depicts two characters who have lost their voice and sight, respectively, and who, through ancient Greek, seek new possibilities of communication within silence and absence. It is a narrative that reflects on existence and relationality through poetic language. The study first analyzes the rhythm that emerges from the novel’s syntactic structures and lexical choices, and then compares it with the European Portuguese translation, critically examining the loss and transformation of rhythm. Based on this critical rhythm analysis, it further proposes an alternative translation into Portuguese. In doing so, the article conceive stranslation not as a mere transfer of meaning but as a creative act of reconstructing the movement of the entire language. It also underscores that, given translation’s constraints under market logic and linguistic power, the ethical and political reflections required of translation studies must originate in poetics as a theory of language.
