이 글에서는 『햄릿(Hamlet)』이 국내 지면과 무대 번역에서 이루어진 시적 리듬의 활성화 시도를 고찰한다. 율문 번역은 원천문화와 도착문화 사이의 새로운 관계 정립이 이루어지는 징후로서, 한국 시가 율격이나 음악을 통해 시적 리듬을 활성화하는 사례들은 셰익스피어를 더는 숭배의 대상이 아니라 도착문화의 필요에 따라 변용할 수 있을 만큼 우리의 문학 및 연극 체계가 성숙하고 발전했음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 『햄릿』 번역에 나타난 리듬에 주목하면서 기존 율문 번역의 문제점과 개선 방안을 검토했고, 음악극 각색 사례를 통해 리듬이 공연의 주도적 역할로 재활성화되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 언어와 불가분의 관계에 있는 대사 리듬은 번역 과정에서 변화가 불가피하다. 따라서 도착언어에 맞춤한 리듬을찾는 작업은 원문으로부터 멀어지는 것이 아니라 리듬을 통해 작가가 얻고자 했던 공연의 목표에 더 가까이 다가가는 것으로 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This article examines attempts to activate the poetic rhythm in Korean translations of Hamlet on the page and the stage. The metrical translations and musical adaptations are symptomatic of a new relationship between the source and the target culture: Korean literary and theatrical systems have reached a stage of maturation and development to transform Shakespeare, which is no longer a cultural capital to revere but material to adjust to the demands of the target culture. Focusing on the rhythm in Hamlet translations, this paper reviews existing metrical translations with proposals for alternatives, then analyzes the role of rhythm in the musical adaptations. As it is inseparable from language, rhythms inevitably change in translation. Therefore, finding a suitable rhythm for the target language is not a betrayal of the original text but a way to approach one of the performative goals of the playwright.
