Abstract

The appearance of slums is still an indispensable landscape in cities of the Global South such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Although there have been recent opportunities to see these slum spaces up close through slum tours, slums in the Global South metropolis are still perceived as ‘inaccessible’ or ‘dystopian places’ linked to urban poverty, crime, illegality, and informality. In this way, the influence of the mass media cannot be overlooked in further strengthening the dystopian impression of the general public of urban slums in the Global South. Since slums, which have become symbols of poverty and crime, are perceived as spaces that are inaccessible to the general public, people mainly indirectly look into the space through media such as TV programs, movies, social media, and YouTube, and go through the process of making sense of the place. Therefore, how the mass media reproduces and make sense of urban slums in the Global South can have a decisive impact on people’s perception of the place. The purpose of this study is to analyse the narrative structure of a television programme featuring favelas in Brazil(Rio de Janerio) in order to examine how the mass media influences people’s perception and meaning of urban slums in the Global South. By analysing the narrative structure that appears in the KBS Special <Tears in Favela>, which aired in August 2016, it seeks to find answer to what kind of reality in Favela is reproduced and how it is reproduced. According to analytic results, <Tears in Favela> deals with the security and poverty issues of Rio’s favela through a typical narrative structure. Through the binary opposition structure of ‘here’ and ‘there’, ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’, along with and discourse structure, it means favela as a place where poverty, violence, death, and pain are condensed. This study is of academic significance in that it examines the reproduction and reproduction methods of favelas through the analysis of narrative structure, which is mainly used in media text analysis, but there is a limit to generalising the analysis results by limiting it to a single case study.
