Abstract

This study examines Canto Orfeônico, the choral education program institutionalized under the Vargas regime in 1930s Brazil, to explore how emotions were constructed and governed between nationalist projects and cultural practices. Focusing on four children’s folk songs included in the Guia Prático, the analysis identifies four key devices of emotional governance: repetition, command, embodiment, and role performance. The findings reveal that Canto Orfeônico functioned as a cultural-political apparatus that went beyond mere music education, internalizing emotions through rhythm and play while instilling social hierarchies and moral order. This process integrated Brazil’s characteristic emotional grammar, conceptualized as the ‘Homem Cordial’, with state-led nation-building, producing a structure that regulated emotions not through suppression but through playfulness and collective synchronization. By micro-analyzing how emotional governance interacted with and was reconfigured by the internal affective structures of culture, this study offers a critical historical reflection on the formation of Brazil’s emotional culture.
