Abstract
It is said that old powerful and violent racist practices were ended officially and the end of racism was declared. Nevertheless, the repressive and discriminative realities around race aren't eliminated today. To understand and overcome these realities, this paper aims to study new racism today. That is, this paper aims to inquire into the structure, characteristics, and essentials of new racist situations in the era of globalization, in order to search for the way to the equal coexistence based on mutual communication without regard to racial, ethnic, and cultural origins. In Chapter Ⅱ, this paper firstly examines the problems of race and racism related to the concepts like ‘coloniality’, ‘colonial difference’, and ‘global coloniality’ that the Latin American modernity / coloniality research group has proposed. Taking note of the group's opinion that racism is a phenomenon and an outcome of modern colonial domination and it has become the most effective and long-lasting instrument of universal domination up to this day, this chapter explains historically and globally the existence of colonial / racial hierarchies today. Next, labeling new racism with varied names as neoliberal racism, Chapter Ⅲ and Ⅳdiscuss how neoliberal racism appropriates the concepts around race in its own way and what way it is done. The discussions in these chapters show that the existence of new racism like neoliberal racism proves the repressive situations of racial subjects who are not left out of global colonial / racial hierarchies. And they also reveal that neoliberal racism is no other than the domination strategy for perpetuating White's privileges and a cultural product of the specific world historical conditions of European modernity. In the conclusion, this paper asserts that the efforts to fight against neoliberal racism should be made for organizing and performing new thinking and practices toward the new world in which all people are equal. This paper also underlines that these efforts help to raise the possibilities of overcoming discriminative situations and finding the way to the equal coexistence inter-racially, inter-ethnically and inter-culturally.
