Abstract

George Orwell discovered the possibility of revolution at rather an unusual situation, in the midst of the Battle of Britain. Orwell perceived the revolution as the transformation the British society must endure in order to win the war against the Fascists. Although the transformation would require revolutionary changes, Orwell believed that it would be achievable through a peaceful process. Orwell designated the people comprising the working and the middle class to be the driving force behind the revolution. Orwell did not believe in the existence of antagonism between the working class and the middle class. On the contrary, he claimed that the difference was less than opinion of that day. According to Orwell, economic factor was not a pivotal element that divided the classes. Language could be a critical factor that distinguished the social classes. Orwell stated that the working class alone would not achieve the revolution, but the driving force for the revolution would not exist in any other classes, especially among the socialists and intelligentsia. Orwell believed that the revolution could only succeed when the working and middle classes consolidated. In Orwell's opinion, the power to move revolution derived from patriotism, not from antagonism against other classes. And patriotism meant the allegiance to one's surroundings and the environment, not toward an abstract entity, such as a state. So the patriotism differed from the one vindicated by the Conservatives. Orwell’s patriotism was rooted in Englishness that was pervaded in English culture of ordinary people. This deeply rooted allegiance of the ordinary people to their surroundings, rather than the antagonism against different classes, has been the foundation for the revolution. Because this loyalty stemmed from a regional level, the focus had to be on the regions to bring out the most of people's patriotism.
