애국주의와 평화주의의 홀리스틱 화해를 통한 평화적 애국심의 구성

‘나라를 사랑하는 마음’은 자연스럽지만, ‘국가를 사랑하는 마음’은 왠지 부자연스러우며, 무엇보다 애국주의에 내장된 전체주의적 위험을 노정할 수 있다. ‘나라’는 매우 이데올로기적 성격을 갖고, 근대국가의 역사 속에서 ‘나라=국가=국민’이라는 등식을 암시해서 국가주의나 독재를 정당화하기도 한다. 애국주의가 강조하는 공동체의식이 배타적인 배외의식으로 전락할 수도 있고, ‘표준형 국민’에 어긋나는 사람들을 억압하는 기제가 될 위험성도 있다. 그런데 오늘날 민족국가 시대의 애국주의는 세계화 시대를 맞이하여 개편하지 않으면 안 되는 중요한 전환적 국면에 놓여 있다. 여기에서 애국주의와 평화주의는 어떤 접점을 만들 수 있을까? 의문 없는 충성과 영토 확장을 요구하는 맹목적 애국주의, 그리고 평화의 가치를 위해 나라가 존재해야 한다는 비판적 애국주의 사이에는 갈등이 발생할 수밖에 없다. 그런데 사회정의를 통한 평화를 옹호하는 평화주의자들과 그리고 부패와 폭정을 비판하는 애국주의자들과는 화해할 수 있는 여지가 있다. 그래서 필자는 양자의 홀리스틱 화해를 통해 평화적 애국심이 구성될 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 맹목적 애국심은 자제를 해야 하지만, 애국심 자체를 포기해서는 안 된다고 본다. 나를 존재하게 하는 근거로서 나라를 사랑하는 마음은 필요하고, 평화의 근거지가 나라이기 때문이다. 본고는 이런 문제에 대해 극명한 대조를 보이고 있는 애국주의 담론과 평화주의 담론의 홀리스틱 화해를 통해 평화적 애국심을 구성하고자 한다.
Abstract
‘Love of country' can be exposed to the risk of totalitarianism embedded in the patriotism. Patriotism also justify nationalism and dictatorship. The community spirit of patriotism emphasized that this may be reduced to the Chauvinism, there is a danger of a mechanism to suppress the people against the standardized nationality. But today, in the era of the nation-state patriotism lies in the critical transitional phase that must not be reorganized in the face of the era of globalization. I wonder where holistic harmony between pacifism and patriotism are to make any contacts. No question of blind loyalty and patriotism requiring territorial expansion is bound to cause conflict between critical patriotism of a nation that must exist for the value of peace. But there is room to reconciliate between pacifists who advocate peace through social justice and patriots who criticize the corruption from those patriots and tyranny. So I would like to explore a holistic way. Patriotism should refrain from blindly, but I do not think we should give up the patriotism itself. This article is intended to configure the peaceful patriotism through the holistic reconciliation between pacifist discourse and the discourse of patriotism that show the stark contrast on this issue.
