Abstract
This study aims to analyze the poetry of North Korean defector poets Baek I-mu and Jang Jin-sung to identify the aesthetic mechanisms and academic value of “Testimonial Literacy” in the literary representation of North Korean reality. Historically, poems dealing with North Korea in the history of South Korean poetry remained within the realm of conceptual inference or abstract longing for unification due to the absence of direct experience. In contrast, the works of these two poets secure a unique historical and literary status by restoring vivid life scenes through literary language. Accordingly, this paper employs the methodological framework of “Testimonial Literacy” to academically structure the aesthetic contact point of realism, where “experiential facts” (non-fiction) and “literary stylization” (fiction) intersect. Through this, it seeks to clarify how their poetry functions as a “boundary text” that exposes the contradictions of the North Korean regime and evokes universal empathy by combining poetic forms with solid factuality rooted in existential truth. To ensure the authenticity of their poetic testimony, Baek I-mu and Jang Jin-sung utilize dry statements—devoid of lyricism—and the aesthetics of irony to sublimate tragic reality into an artistic dimension. By analyzing these aesthetic devices as rhetorical strategies that block the reader's sentimental consumption and induce rational confrontation, this study contributes to elevating the perspective on defector poetry from mere “recording” to an “artistic system.” In conclusion, their testimony serves as a literary counter-attack by insiders against the regime’s fictional narratives, as well as a practical record that restores historical truth and urges the ethical awakening of the community.
