Abstract
This study is one of the basic studies for a deep understanding of ‘authentic understandings’ in science education. The research questions were as follows: (1) What are the characteristics and limitations of the discussions on ‘authentic understandings’ in understanding by design? (2) What are the ways to overcome the limitations of the discussions on ‘authentic understandings’ in science education? The research results are as follows. First, the existing discussions on understanding by design has mainly been conducted at the model level for instructional design. In particular, it is difficult to find a study that has deeply explored ‘authentic understandings’ in Understanding by Design based on a specific philosophy or systematic theory. Second, this study attempted to understand ‘authentic understandings’ through a ‘essential-holistic’ perspective. Specifically, this study attempted two approaches. Through the first approach (seeing the forest and the trees at the same time), we explained the process of forming ‘authentic understandings’ in the practices in science and the organic relationship between the facets of understanding in that process. Meanwhile, through the second approach (seeing the forest from the trees progressively), we analyzed each facet of understanding (e.g., empathy and self-knowledge) and attempted to grasp the complete form of ‘authentic understandings’ itself. ‘Authentic understandings’ viewed from an ‘essential-holistic’ perspective is an understanding that encompasses not only knowledge and functional elements but also holistic elements such as empathy (surprise, wonder, consideration) and self-knowledge (personal knowledge). In particular, this ‘authentic understandings’ implies a change in the ontological dimension (holistic growth) beyond the epistemological dimension. Finally, we discussed the development and utilization of a framework of ‘authentic understandings’ suitable for science curriculum.
