Abstract

This study sought to clarify the concept of science values in science education and to propose an educationally applicable framework. The analysis began with a review of existing distinctions among values in science, scientific value, and the value of science, along with value-related dimensions discussed in science education research. National curricula and prior studies were also examined, followed by a Delphi survey with experts. From the literature review, six preliminary dimensions were identified: cognitive (epistemic), instrumental, social, ethical, aesthetic, and sensitivity to nature and science. While experts in the Delphi process acknowledged the relevance of these dimensions, they also noted considerable overlap and ambiguity. Based on iterative feedback, the categories were refined into five dimensions: Usefulness, Ethicality, Sensitivity, Aesthetic Characteristics, and Epistemic Characteristics. This refined structure reflects a balanced view of science values, encompassing both intrinsic features of science—such as epistemic norms and the aesthetic qualities of scientific explanations—and extrinsic dimensions shaped by personal, social, and environmental contexts, including practical usefulness, ethical responsibility, and emotional engagement with nature. The study contributes by offering a structured framework that can support conceptual clarity in science education research and assist teachers in designing learning goals and learning experiences that incorporate diverse dimensions of science values. As science values are context-dependent, the proposed categories remain provisional. Future research should examine how learners internalize these values in practice, compare value frameworks across cultural contexts, and explore connections with broader educational agendas such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED).
