Abstract
This study critically examines the concept of ‘Essential Questions,’ a pivotal element of curriculum design within Understanding by Design (UbD), and explores its significance for science education. The research analyzed the characteristics and limitations of UbD’s discourse on Essential Questions and sought ways to overcome these limitations. The findings are as follows: First, the concept of Essential Questions was discussed in pursuit of ‘authentic understanding.’ Particularly, through continuous revisions of UbD, it has been refined to enhance practicality in instructional design and implementation while integrating curriculum design with classroom practice. Second, four primary limitations were identified in the existing UbD discourse on Essential Questions: (L1) absence of background theory, (L2) insufficient explanation of the relationship between Essential Questions and related concepts, (L3) inadequate reflection of science subject-specific characteristics, and (L4) lack of concrete discussion regarding instructional design and implementation. Third, to address these limitations, this study adopted an ‘essential-holistic’ perspective and conducted an in-depth discussion of Essential Questions through an analysis of prior research on The Evolution of Physics (EoP), which embodies ‘practices in science’ (related to L1). Central questions consistently emphasized in the EoP Electrodynamics section were identified, illustrating how Essential Questions guide lower-level inquiries and clarify their relationship with inquiry and authentic understanding (related to L2). Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated that central questions encompassing sub-questions can serve as Essential Questions in science education (related to L3). Finally, the case of EoP, where the author uses central questions to invite and engage readers in the world of science, is seen as a model example for physics teachers who want to develop students’ understanding through meaningful questions in the classroom (related to L4). Overall, essential questions that guide students into the practices of science play an important role in closely connecting and integrating teachers, students, and subject matter.
